A little about Polish Pottery

When using in the oven you must make sure the bottom of the piece is covered, even if it's with a little liquid, as the piece may crack otherwise.
This lovely pottery originated as a folk art in the early 1800's in the German province of Silesia, which is now a part of Poland.
Early decorations were derived from the peacock feather, which was a sign of prosperity, these pieces where created by the farmers of the region. Traditional patterns use green, blue and earth tones. Each piece is handmade with a white clay that is found in Poland. Plates and bowls are hand thrown while other forms are cast from molds. The stoneware is then fired at temperatures in excess of 1350 degrees centigrade. The firing insures highly durable stoneware whic can retain heat and cold for long periods. The patterns are stamped on, using stamps hand cut from sea sponges. The most exclusive patterns are done free hand, so no two are exactly the same.
Traditional patterns are initialed by the artist are are not limited in production. Signature pieces are done byvery skilled artisans and are more detailed in design. These pieces are numbered as well as signed and are called "UNIKAT" meaning unique. These pieces are more expensive and highly collectable. The family that produces this line employs approx. 21 people (women) to paint thepieces, each person has there own specialty in decoration. Variations in color or pattern will occur. The UNIKAT ceramicware is a little thinner than the Zaklady ware, but still has the same durable qualities.
