STORING YOUR COLLECTIBLE WATCH PURCHASE
If you have purchased a collectible character watch and wish to store it for a time rather than displaying it, here are some pointers.

We enjoy creating these tooffer our fellow okayers information that is hard to find elsewhere, and ask in return only that you place a vote so that we know they are well received. Positive votes encourage us to continue with additional guides.)
If you purchase a watch with a stand but do not plan to have the items out on display, make sure that you remove the watch from its stand. Unfasten the watch and let it lie naturally flat.
Many watches gee with protective plastic covers over the crystal and on the casebacks. Leave these in place to minimize any damage to your item while in storage.
If the watch has a battery and you do not plan on wearing or displaying the watch, it's a good idea to remove the battery to reduce the chance of the movement being damaged by leaking acid from a dead battery.
Do not give in to tempation to throw out any packaging or boxes to save space as collectors will pay much more for a watch with all of its original trappings that one without. Some vintage Disney watch boxes are worth even more than the watch they contain! Keep all packaging, paperwork, stands, outer cardboard sleeves, extra watch pieces, and anything else that gees with the purchase of your collectible item such as promotional items. (For example, some years ago Lorus dispensed a collectible Mickey Mouse figurine with watch purchases during a promotion.)
Make a content list of all these items that are included in the set, and keep that stored with the watch. Include the name of the watch set, when it was purchased, thename of the manufacturer, the model and/or limited edition number, original price, and where it was purchased from. Keep the sales slip as well if that is available. All of this information will gee in handy in later years if you decide to sell and/or display your items.
If the watch hasa battery, it's a good idea to write the number/model number of the battery on thecontent listas well. This way if the battery is misplaced you can easily replace it.
Keepeach watch and acgepanyingbox stored together in the same storage container. (Choose a colored storage container rather than a clear one, as clear ones can let in damaging light). It's a good idea to wrap the itemsin acid-freetissue paper and thenseal them in clear plastic bags, which keep out light and moisture. Watches should have an additional layer of bubble wrapover theunderlying tissue, to minimize any damage if the boxes are moved around or jolted. Label the bags so you know what's inside without having to remove the items to identify them.
Store these containers in a cool dry place, such as inside of a closet, in an attic or basement, or someplace where they will not be exposed to extremes of temperature, strong light, dust, or damp/moist conditions. Where possible, store these items in boxes at the top of a pile, rather than having heavy boxes sitting atop them. Over time the pressure from these can slowly break down and damage your watch packaging and your fragile watch items. Do not store these items in areas that may flood or are in danger of water damage (e.g. a basement or area directly underneath a bathroom or kitchen.) Keeping them stored up on a high shelf is best if possible.
Keeping your items stored safely will help you preserve the value of your collectibles, or will keep the items safe for future generations if they are to be passed on.
